Illegal Constructions Continue Unchecked in Sonamarg; Court Orders Flouted, Ecological Concerns Rise

Sonamarg: In a deeply concerning development, illegal constructions are reportedly continuing unabated in the world-famous tourist resort Sonamarg, situated in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Despite court orders imposing a blanket ban on all types of construction activity in the area, concrete structures are being raised in broad daylight, allegedly with the silent approval of the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA).

Eyewitnesses and local residents allege that the SDA has turned a blind eye to the violations, allowing violators to carry out construction unchecked in the lush green meadows of this ecologically sensitive zone. The resort, known for its pristine natural beauty and ecological significance, is slowly being taken over by unauthorized structures, posing a grave threat to the environment.

What’s even more shocking is that SDA has two active checkpoints one on the national highway side and another near the main market road side, yet construction material continues to reach the meadows without any intervention. This raises serious questions about how such violations are being facilitated under the nose of regulatory authorities.

“If checkpoints exist to monitor movement, how is cement, sand, and steel reaching the restricted zones? It’s either negligence or collusion,” said an environmental advocate of Honorable J&K Highcourt.

“There’s a clear violation of the court’s directives, and yet the authorities remain mute spectators. It feels like a nexus between officials and violators,” said a local resident, requesting anonymity.

Activists and environmental experts are warning that if the current situation continues, Sonamarg could face a man-made ecological disaster. The unregulated construction not only threatens biodiversity but also undermines the area’s tourism potential, which depends heavily on its unspoiled landscape.

Despite repeated public outcry and legal restrictions, the SDA has reportedly failed to take any concrete action. Locals have appealed to higher authorities, including the district administration and judiciary, to take urgent and strict action to protect Sonamarg from further degradation.

“Sonamarg is not just a tourist spot, it’s a natural heritage — and it’s being destroyed bit by bit in the name of development, a local activist told The-Newscast

As the situation escalates, public pressure is mounting on the authorities to enforce the court ban, take action against violators, and ensure the protection of Sonamarg’s fragile ecosystem for future generations.
